What we are upto - the future of design thinking

Yesterday Andrew spoke at the Future of Design Thinking symposium for Eidos (an Australian public policy think tank). The role of the symposium was to investigate how Design Thinking as a methodology could be integrated into existing learning structures such as high school and university systems. The emphasis on Design Thinking is to provide interdisciplinary processes where workers in different industries can collaborate to solve wicked problems: problems which cannot be solved, but rather solutions which improve the problem state. While design thinking has become a commonly used process in famous universities and businesses within the United States (such as Harvard, MIT, Stanford and IDEO), it is yet to be adopted within Australian education.

The talk that we presented discussed a project that we did in 2007 investigating the role of biofeedback in computer games to enhance user engagement and to enable the game system and intelligence to gain a better understanding of the individual and their ongoing experience within gaming environments. Overall there were a number of excellent presentations, and there is a general consensus that the role of design in the future of learning is going to play a more important role, even in disciplines such as engineering, health and science where often the work is done in isolation to other industries.

Ipswich Events Interactive Community

Well, we had the pleasure of attending the Ipswich 'Show-n-shine' exhibition on the weekend and it inspired us to create a website for community events around Ipswich. We have started this by putting up a collaborative Car Club Site which we will evaluate at the end of June 2009. Please have a look and let us know what you think.

Education for thought!

School is back, the holidays are over and so many parents are faced with the problems associated with education, as if they, as parents, have provided the best possible solutions for their child's needs. At a recent TED seminar, there was a particularly interesting discussion by Sir Ken Robinson on education. He discusses how creativity is quite undervalued in modern society, especially in education. As schools and institutions push harder and harder towards academic studies, we really have to start thinking about placing a higher priority on encouraging the creative and social sides of our children, whether through services such as child care, day care, or just encouraging as much play time for our kids as possible.
